Comic Coalition Project Part 03: Superman, Iron Man, Rocket Raccoon, Spawn, Nighthawk, and Darkseid

This is an extra double sized edition of the Comic Coalition Project. This time I take one two of DC's biggest characters, Marvel's new poster boy, a raccoon, and the 90's creation, Spawn.
Clark Kent changing into Superman

This is a classic pose of Superman that I've been wanting to try for some time but never got around to it. Well now I did and I'm pleased with how well this turned out. The picture doesn't to this justice. The amazing thing with this sketch is that, despite being a new pose and a character I am not too familiar with, it took only a few minutes to do.

Iron Man, in flight.

This Iron Man sketch was not the first draft. I did an entirely different pose for Mr. Stark before I did this piece. The problem with that pose was that it was stiff. Everything about the sketch was nice, but it just looked stiff and too much like my Green Lantern sketch. Well after watching Iron Man with my girlfriend the other night, I came up with this in flight pose of Iron Man and I like it more. Though the butt still looks odd, but then again I'm no Ed Benes. Also the choice for this classic armor comes from the fact I own a small Iron Man toy with this armor and it helped with the perspective. That and I like the pointy face-plate.

Rocket Raccoon, firing his gun.

This sketch is a lot of firsts. It's my first time drawing a humanoid animal, my first time designing a halfway decent gun, and my first time drawing Rocket Raccoon. I never read Guardians of the Galaxy so I had to research this character a bit before deciding on the right pose. I was at first going to do an about face shot of him shooting but it didn't look right and I wasn't too comfortable drawing the Raccoon muzzle in that angle. So I decided to go 3/4 angle and it worked perfectly. Though he does look more like a cat, I'm basing off some source images off of Comicvine.com. The person who asked for the sketch said it looks a lot like a sonic style, and I have to agree with him. Eh if this comic thing doesn't work out I could always draw for the Sonic Fandom, I guess....*shivers*

Spawn, guest staring my legs on the sides.

Like with Rocket Raccoon, I've never read a lot of Spawn. I don't really care enough about the character to read his material, but I never turn down a requests. Problem with spawn was pose, then a couple people on twitter suggested, something mopey and long flowing cape. Well I used that to conjure up this sketch. I went a little crazy on the spikes on the gauntlet things. Though I do really like how it game together. Also emulated McFarlane and the other 90's artist signature thing for it and I liked that.

Nighthawk

Never heard of Nighthawk? Well he's basically Marvel's version of Batman, well the sane one at least. I did have a couple issues with Nighthawk and they concern his costume. Seems no artist I found drawn him the same way. Some pieces his cape was like feathers, in others it was just a cape. In some images the emblem was insane and complex, the others it was simple. Also the Eye cowl thing is frustrating beyond belief. I have issues drawing pointy cowls like Nighthawk and Wolverine's and this was no exception. I am not too happy about it, but it could've turned out much worse.

Darkseid, charging his Omega beams

This was an easy piece for the most part. Deciding whether or not to include the Omega symbol was a matter of getting it to look right and the Omega symbol did not look right. So I went to the old school style. I think the shading washed it out, but oh well. Also was debating adding some Kirby Krackle to the Omega beams but decided not to as I'm still learning how to use them on such a small scale and didn't want to clutter the image.

That  concludes todays Comic Coalition update. I am running low on requests, so if you want to get in on this, just comment below and include the character of your choice.

  1. Never read Guardians of the Galaxy? you need to remedy that straight away sir! Also, don't delve into the world of Sonic fandom, because even though you'd thrive there, its not a world you wanna be involved in. Buh.

  2. Yeah, hence the Shuddering. I've seen all I need to see of Sonic Fandom. It's a scary world. As for Guardians, got a lot on my plate but it's towards the top of the buy list.
